Hey haters! I know you tend to think you’re pretty sharp. That you know everything we’ll say and do before we say and do it. But I bet you can’t guess what my favorite thing is about Scientologists. You should know this one thing before you spew whatever it is you've got all lined up in your cabeza.
Man’s entire history has, to a large degree, centered on the question of God. Wars have been fought, families torn apart, entire groups of people persecuted all because of how they worshiped or believed in God.
One cannot, in fact, be a devout Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu or Buddhist and still wish to do harm to those who believe differently (or choose not to believe at all).
I grew up in the 1950s and ‘60s with the science versus religion debate in full swing. It was and is, the major philosophical argument of the modern era and I found both sides electrifying and puzzling at the same time.
The prophets wanted their followers to believe in God and follow His Word. It’s true that some adherents to these religions do better than others in following their scriptures; they range from virtuous to considerably-less-than-perfect, but the vast majority fall short of putting a scarlet mark on their creed.
Multimillionaire and Silicon Valley whiz kid Anthony Levandowski is obviously no dummy. So I can only conclude that he missed a few history classes. The man has started a religion! If he hadn’t missed those history classes he’d realize that starting a religion is the quickest way to get yourself strung up, hung up, shot at or at least laughed out of town.
We know from experience in the workplace that there are those employees who need constant supervision to maintain productivity and quality. Yet there are many others who operate splendidly on minimal supervision. They motivate themselves and set their own standards of achievement and professionalism.
The question of how an all-loving and all-powerful God could allow things like this shooting to happen is one of the fundamental existential questions I wrestled with as a young person many times.
