Urge editors and publishers to adopt standards of journalistic ethics and eliminate bias and hate in reporting on religion.
The public’s right to information is a fundamental right and cornerstone of a free and democratic society. So is their right to freedom of religion.
Discriminatory rhetoric and antireligious hate speech have no place in “reporting”—about any group. Media that disrespects religious rights marginalizes communities, fuels bigotry and incites hate. It thereby endangers lives.
We urge publishers and editors to adopt the Charter on Journalistic Ethics in Relation to Respect for Religion or Belief.
Ethics extends to coverage of religion. Freedom of religion belongs to us all.
