On August 24, another source responded to STAND’s call for information on enablers of hate blogger Tony Ortega , revealing the identity of “John P Capitalist,” the commenting account employed by Brent C. Williams of California.

The story reads like a sordid crime novel, with Ortega as willing accomplice, motivated by greed and devoid of human decency. It might be entertaining, were it not for the real-life victims of his complacency and collusion—children sold on Backpage as sex slaves, victims of sexual violence, physical and psychological abuse, and murder—the details of which are well-documented.

It’s an old trick. Entice your reader with a juicy headline that may or may not (usually not) have anything to do with the actual content and get that all-important 15 seconds of attention. “ Is Sex Really Necessary?” “ Image Of Elvis’ Face Photographed By Mars Rover .” That sort of thing.

Describing Ortega as “pure filth,” and stating he has “done nothing but to create hatred and division between people,” she revealed: “Karen de la Carriere gives large donations to Tony Ortega... to forward her own sick twisted agenda.”

Reducing hundreds of thousands of sincere individuals to a sneering allusion at the end of a snide put-down is not journalism, nor is it even writing. It’s propaganda, pure and simple.

“Ben Schneiders’ article is an embarrassment to journalism, an exercise in information manipulation and a model to be showcased in Media Bigotry 101,” said STAND Director Bari Berger. “We are disturbed and appalled the Sydney Morning Herald sanctioned Schneiders’ targeting of Scientologists with his blatant ignorance, prejudice and unrestrained antireligious hate.”

Change won’t happen unless you and I stand up for what is right and demand that our beliefs—whatever they may be—are respected as they should be.
