I’d like to share what it’s like to have a celebrity—someone you have admired and been a fan of your whole life—suddenly and very publicly turn against you for no other reason than your religion.

If even I, a young child, could tell that these things that “everybody knew” were simple and obvious lies, how could grown-ups be repeating them? Believing them? Teaching them to their children?

It’s bad enough when adults turn a blind eye to bullying, it’s disgraceful when they encourage it, and it’s criminal when major U.S. corporations contribute to the problem by airing or sponsoring TV programs that set up innocent kids as “different” and therefore as targets.

You see, I understand I am just another “nigger,” and you know what is best for me. You deem yourself my Master. You are not my friend.

“I’m just one person. What could I possibly do?” You’ve heard it, you’ve probably thought it and you’ve very possibly said it. But it’s one of the most destructive ideas known to man.

An actress wins not one, but two Emmys: one for her performance as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and one as a producer for Outstanding Drama Series. Her exuberant acceptance speech brings down the house.
TOLERANCE
I’ve gotten that response several times over the past year when I tell people I’m a Scientologist after they’ve spewed their ignorance all over the subject of my religion. Situation one was on a plane. Two women next to me were gossiping about a magazine article that covered Scientology.

What’s the saying? “It’s as American as baseball and apple pie?” Football gets a lot of the love these days but whenever I go to a live baseball game—anything from little league to major league—I always feel like I’m part of something special, something quintessentially American.
RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
I was told many times growing up that I needed to use a little judgment. This was usually after I had brought about a disaster by not really evaluating what would happen if I did what I was about to do.

Most people are born good. Most people are born with an innate sense of decency, a good concept of justice, and an inborn understanding of right and wrong, One of the first things you’ll hear out of a child’s mouth is “It’s not fair.” Nobody has to teach them of the principle of fairness.
