It never ceases to amaze me that some grown adults starve so much for attention that they stoop to grade-school-level gossip just to get some thumbs-ups and fake-internet-points, even if it means engaging in openly demeaning and broadly discriminatory speech. But on my Monday morning, checking social media after a wonderful weekend outdoor with my family, I got a face full of pratty, bigoted nonsense by just such an attention-starved individual.

At this point, I know I shouldn’t be surprised. But every time it happens, I am. Someone degrades my religion for clickbait.

It should come as no surprise, then, that over the years, THR should continue in its founder’s grand tradition of falsehood, hypocrisy and the incitement of hate. THR’s current scandal involves its naked bigotry of anything or anyone having anything to do with the Church of Scientology.

Netflix’s recent three-part documentary, Murder Among the Mormons, is just the latest in a long line of mainstream media attacks against religion which perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Unfortunately, such stereotypes fuel “other-ness” and hate against minority groups.

If you disagree with someone’s political, philosophical or religious beliefs, according to Karlis and her sources, you have a right to victimize and deprogram them.

Just as bullies only pick on people whom it seems safe to bully, bigots only practice bigotry on minority groups—the ones it’s “safe” to hate. It doesn’t make being a bigot okay, but it does show what and who they really are.

The Daily Beast at first proclaimed its innocence, then temporized with an editorial, then tardily edited out the identifying details of the closeted gay athletes, before finally removing the article entirely whilst putting its writer on the shelf for a few months, after which he returned, “following a lengthy period of intense reflection.”
