RELIGIOUS LITERACY
Two things happened today that prompted this blog. 1. My Mormon neighbors invited me to a Christmas service. Of course I accepted the invitation. 2. And an article came out claiming that the Mormons have squirreled away some 100 billion dollars for charitable purposes. And holy moly good on them.

I’ll admit it, I’m kind of a sucker for those singing competition shows. Please understand, I’m not a singer, and I’ve never had any aspirations of singing into a microphone or in front of a crowd. But listening to people who can do it, and do it well, can really make my day.

My reaction was so physically apparent that my daughter took one look at me and asked: “Why’s your face all red?!” That flushed complexion was, of course, a physical reaction triggered by the emotional experience.

When the first Ghostbusters movie came out in 1988, most of my friends were in love with it, myself included. But one friend whose opinion I respected said she flat-out hated it. “Really? Why?” I asked. “Because, they’re trapping spirits! It made me cry.

According to the astronomers supporting the project, it “will allow us to see deeper into space and observe cosmic objects with unprecedented sensitivity. … When operational, [it] will provide new observational opportunities in essentially every field of astronomy and astrophysics.”

Let me just start by saying I’m about as girlie of a girl as anyone I’ve ever known. A dress is my attire of choice, even during many forms of exercise, and I absolutely love makeup.

I had not told the old man that I was expecting my first child, but somehow he knew. And I never forgot.

Damning headlines and unforgivable scandal have, in recent times, become synonymous in the media with the Catholic Church, and I admire and applaud the journalists and survivors who have been brave enough to share their stories and demand justice. But the mistakes and sins of those responsible, even (and maybe especially) those at the highest level, are not Catholicism and are not religion.

Religious people live longer. There’s plenty of scientific evidence to support that statement, and if you click on the link you can read about several.

Guests of many religions were in attendance. We had Jewish relatives from my side, Catholics from my husband's side, Christians from the groom’s side, and of course, Scientologist friends in abundance.
