Dear Alexi,
Let’s assume, for a moment, that religious discrimination is not your purpose as a journalist.
With that as a basic assumption—an assumption which may or may not be rooted in fact—I imagine it won’t be too hard for you to see the absurdity of your recent article’s headline. Interchange my religion with Islam: “Muslims to Appear at Miami Super Bowl Event.”
Can you take yourself seriously as a journalist, after that?
Regarding what I know with certainty is your purpose—seeking scandal—you need look no further than the drug epidemic in your city. In 2016, Miami-Dade County’s overdose deaths from cocaine and opioids reached a 15-year high. To translate for you: that means people—those you share a city with, those whom it’s your job to service, inform and help by virtue of the fact that journalism is your career of choice, those you must at least pretend you care about—are dying.
You won’t have to invent, twist or use your own scare tactics to write that story.
I leave it to you whether you would rather help or harm a nonprofit group working to reverse that trend.
But please know what you choose speaks volumes about who you really are.
Sincerely,
Edward Parkin
